Romania

The tour

Our plan is to travel for 10 months from March 2024 until January 2025. During that time, we'll be taking in parts of Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Africa and finally back to Australia, home after more than ten years living in Hong Kong.

The difficulty in planning a trip like this is not just where to go, it's how long to spend in each location. We know where we want to start, India and we know where we'll be ending; Sydney, January 2025. In between, we've carved out what we think will be enough time for each place along the way, but only by visiting will we truly know.

Since we started planning, the itinerary has changed and will no doubt, keep changing; if there's one lesson everyone must learn on a travel adventure, it's to be flexible.

Bucharest

Our modern history tour continues with a stop in Bucharest. We'll be experience the history of the capital on a guided city walking tour and discover what life was like during the communist regime. This includes a visit to Ceausescu Villa, the grand former residence of Romania's last dictator.

Transylvania

Of course, a trip to Romania wouldn't be complete without a side trip to Transylvania to see Bran Castle, better known as Dracula's castle. The twins are particularly excited to learn more about the infamous Vlad the Impaler.

Iasi

Iași is a city in the country's east, near the border with Moldova. Home to the oldest university in Romania, it's been a cultural and political hub since the 15th century. It's also where my family resided. Our trip here will be all about digging into that history a little deeper and trying to uncover family secrets hidden for decades.
