Family Gap Year

The Global Tour

GAP YEAR EXPLAINED

What is FGY?

Travel

A family gap year is a period of time taken out of your normal routine to travel and explore as a family.

Connect

A gap year is a unique opportunity to connect, grow closer and make lasting memories while seeing the world.

Restore

Extended travel also allows each of us to take a break from work and school to focus on nature, culture and giving back.

Welcome

We're the McDonald family, welcome to our Family Gap Year website. FGY24 has been a long time in the planning but now we've finally hit the road. We've got a lot to share and you're invited to be part of it.

Getting the most our of trip

Our FGY Plan

Explore

First things first, this adventure isn't quite global, we're not going to North or South America. But we will be taking in parts of Asia, the Middle East, Europe, Africa and Australia before we hit Sydney, our home town, in January 2025. Like all good plans, ours is subject to change but this is what the itinerary looks like so far.

Learn

This trip has always been about more than just sightseeing, this is the ultimate classroom experience with different teachers guiding us every day. The idea is simple; read before we go, immerse ourselves while we're there, and come home with more knowledge, skills and gratitude than when we left.

Give

Giving back is integral to this trip. We want to volunteer as a family and hopefully, repay hospitality in each country we visit. Anything to remind ourselves how lucky we are and to practice giving back wherever we can. So far, we have projects lined up in education, conservation and community development.

What to Pack

When you’re planning an extended trip like ours, you have to think about what you’re going to pack as much as about where you’re going to go. For us, there’ll be a range of activities while we’re on the ground, plus the actual travel itself; flying, driving and of course, walking, lots of walking. And let’s face it, probably lots of queues too. That means everything we bring has got to be practical, useful, secure and comfortable.

Let's Connect

If there’s something you want us to see, taste, visit or experience, drop us a line and let’s connect. We’re also open to suggestions for volunteer experiences as well, so don’t be afraid to get in touch. And if you’re friends or family and want to join us anywhere on the road, tell us. There’s a promise of free merch if you join the journey!
