Greece

The tour

Our plan is to travel for 10 months from March 2024 until January 2025. During that time, we'll be taking in parts of Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Africa and finally, back to Australia. Back home after more than ten years living in Hong Kong.

The difficulty in planning a trip like this is not where to go, it's how long to spend in each location. We know where we want to start, India and we know where we'll be ending; Sydney, January 2025.

Since we started planning, the itinerary has changed and will no doubt, keep changing; if there's one lesson everyone must learn on a travel adventure, it's to be flexible.

Highlights
  • Seeing the Acropolis
  • Meteora tour
  • Island hopping
  • Learning to sail
  • Volunteering in Athens

Tour Plan

Expand All
Corfu

Our first stop in Greece is the island of Corfu. Famous for its charming architecture and white washed houses, the island's historic town is also a cultural UNESCO World Heritage Site. Of course, there are the beaches too which some argue are the most beautiful in the whole of Greece.

Katakolo

Katakolo or Katakolon is a small port town with a population of only 600 people. But what draws visitors here is ancient Olympia, birthplace of the Olympics.

Athens

You go to Athens and the Acropolis, the Temple of Zeus and Parthenon have to be on your list of sites to explore, particularly as a first time visitor, but we're also keen to find the city's hidden gems. A food tour will be in order as will a cooking class at the Athens Central Market. Speaking of food, there are several food distribution volunteering opportunities too so hopefully we can participate in one of those. We also plan to catch a performance at the ancient Odeon of Herodes Atticus and take a day trip to Delphi. Three days may not be enough!

Santorini

Santorini has long been at the top of our travel bucket list. From its picturesque villages and ancient ruins to dreamy sunsets and rugged, volcanic landscape, this is one of the most beautiful places on earth (or so the pictures paint). While there, we'll be taking in some water sports, sampling plenty of local food and wine and generally soaking up the harmony of this magnificent island.

Mykonos

We debated whether to put Mykonos on our list of places to visit. Known as a party town, we may be too old and too young to really enjoy it, but there are plenty of smaller villages better suited to families such as Kalafati. Beach time and water sports will be high on the agenda as well as fishing, cycling and a boat ride to Delos. Less than an hour away by boat, this ancient metropolis is one of the largest open-air archaeological sites in all of Greece and the birthplace of the Greek god, Apollo.
