Bosnia & Herzegovina

The tour

Our plan is to travel for 10 months from March 2024 until January 2025. During that time, we'll be taking in parts of Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Africa and finally back to Australia, home after more than ten years living in Hong Kong.

The difficulty in planning a trip like this is not just where to go, it's how long to spend in each location. We know where we want to start, India and we know where we'll be ending; Sydney, January 2025.

Since we started planning, the itinerary has changed and will no doubt, keep changing; if there's one lesson everyone must learn on any travel adventure, it's to be flexible.

Highlights
  • Visiting the Sarajevo Tunnel
  • Staying in a preserved war hostel
  • Exploring the old town of Mostar
  • Swimming at Kravica Waterfall
  • A pilgrimage to Apparition Hill

Sarajevo

A global tour exploring ancient and modern history sites wouldn't be complete without a visit to Bosnia and Herzegovina. While the war the Bosnian War that raged there between 1992 and 1995 shouldn't define this part of the world, it is a big drawcard for those wanting to better understand what happened and how people survived and rebuilt their lives in the aftermath. Beyond the war, this part of the world is also rich in ancient history, a real melting pot of Muslim, Jewish, Orthodox and Catholic traditions dating back centuries.

Mostar
The historic town of  Mostar, spanning a deep valley of the Neretva River, developed in the 15th and 16th centuries as an Ottoman frontier town. Famous for its old medieval bridge, the Stari Most, it was destroyed in the war but subsequently rebuilt. Mostar Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and offers a unique blend of Ottoman and Mediterranean influences.
Kravica Waterfalls

Considered one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Balkans, the Kravica Waterfall is said to have originated millions of years ago. This lush oasis is located in the middle of Kravica Nature Park and offers some beautiful hiking and nature watching.

Medjugorje

On June 24, 1981, two young girls were walking in the hamlet of Bijakovici in the parish of Medjugorje when a woman holding an infant appeared high on a hill among the boulders and brambles of Mount Podbrdo. Instinctively, they knew it was the Virgin Mary, but they did not approach her. They and four other children felt called to return the next day and she reappeared every day for the next seven days. Her message was one of peace. Today, it is a pilgrimage site called Apparition Hill and draws more than a million visitors a year.
